Sonatel and Yas Senegal launch limited 5G services

Senegal’s telecom market continues to show steady growth in all sectors. This has been supported by the government’s ambitions to develop a digital transformation of the economy using ICTs and wider access to internet connectivity. Into 2025, the government has made progress with its New Technology Deal roadmap to develop the country’s digital economy by 2034 and establish Senegal as a regional tech hub. Most of the CFA1.105 trillion funding for the 50 key projects has been sourced, which includes contributions from the private sector. There is an emphasis on fostering local innovation in the tech sector, building local data centres (in January 2025 PAIX Data Centres started building a new data centre in Dakar), providing affordable internet coverage for the vast majority of the population, and having all government services online and actively used.

As with most other countries in the region, most telecom voice and data services are via the mobile networks. The number of mobile subscribers increased 7.8% in 2024, on a par with the growth rate seen in 2023. The mobile broadband subscriber base increased 5.1% in 2024, and similar growth is anticipated over the next few years as customers make use of the 5G services. Having secured a 5G concession in July 2023, Sonatel launched fixed 5G services in March 2024 mobile 5G services in the following July. Yas Senegal (formerly Free Senegal and 80%-owned by Axian Group) also has a 5G concession.

Sonatel, the trading name for Orange Group’s local subsidiary Orange Senegal, remains the dominant player in both the fixed-line and mobile sectors, where its share of subscribers has been relatively stable for several years. Yas and Expresso Telecom provide effective competition, while Promobile has emerged as a new operator which has rapidly gained market share since 2021. The newcomer Haya Telecom still has a negligible market share, at only 0.1% as of the beginning of 2025.
