Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived on 15 February 2005 and has not been updated. The Irish data and Internet market has long been something of an anomaly in Western Europe. The country, despite its small size, has demonstrated dramatic economic growth and transformation on the back of a booming knowledge economy in the 1990s and early 2000s. Ireland has one of the largest ICT and related services economies in Europe relative to the size of its GDP and is a major exporter of these. Internet and mobile communications usage is broadly in line with the rest of the EU. Nevertheless, it has been very slow to adopt broadband in either the residential or business markets. This report presents a historical snapshot of the Irish data and Internet markets in 2004.
