Synopsis

Listed on the local Indian and New York Stock Exchanges, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) is controlled by the Tata Group, the second largest Indian conglomerate. VSNL is the leading Indian provider of International Long-distance (ILD) and Internet related services. In April 2002, it lost its 130-year ILD monopoly, and faces sharply declining revenues in its core business. VSNL is adopting a number of strategies to survive including obtaining end-users by acquisition, moving into NLD and expanding its national backbone, moving into broadband Internet, expanding into overseas markets, down sizing and cost cutting.
