Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived in June 2004 and has not been updated since. The Portugal Telecom Group is the largest telecommunications and multimedia company in Portugal. It was formed from the merger of the then Telecom Portugal (state owned), Telefones de Lisboa and Teledifusora de Portugal. The state commenced selling the company to the public in 1995 and progressively reduced its share to zero. Portugal Telecom is listed in Lisbon and New York. At national level, it offers local, long-distance and international telephone service, as well as circuit rental. Its services include mobile phones, paging, cable TV, data communication, VAS and broadcasting. It also has major investments in Brazil and some minor ones in other countries.
