Synopsis

Listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange in July 2002, Maxis Communications operates a GSM900 digital mobile network in Malaysia, offering mobile postpaid and prepaid telephony under the maxis and Hotlink brand respectively. In support of its mobile business, Maxis operates a domestic fixed-line network and an international gateway that offer voice and data services to business customers. Maxis was awarded a conditional 3G licence in July 2002. In September 2002, Maxis began negotiations for the acquisition TimeCel, the mobile business unit of Time dotCom. The deal was completed in May 2003, increasing Maxis’ mobile market share from around 34% to around 43%.
