Synopsis

This profile was archived in January 2006 and was last updated in March 2005. MTNL is India’s dominant fixed-line telecommunications incumbent in Delhi and Mumbai. With the market opened to competition in 2001, MTNL has been facing rivalry for its share of the market and declining long-distance call rates. To diversify its revenue base, the cash rich company has expanded into GSM and CDMA cellular services and is developing its Internet related services, including ADSL, Intelligent Network services, call centres and IDCs. The company is expanding beyond its traditional areas to offer Internet services nationwide, and to provide basic services in Nepal. MTNL is considered a likely candidate for further divestment by the government.
