Synopsis

Spain is one of the larger markets in Europe with the greatest activity in the mobile sector, and disappointing take-up of the Internet. The same is true for the smaller Portugal. Low Internet penetration in Spain is partly due to per-minute access charges, while prepaid payment schemes have driven mobile subscribers faster than the EU average and to above EU average penetration levels in both countries. Third Generation Mobile Systems (3G) have been licensed and delayed in both countries, and digital TV champions have been licensed in both countries, though the Spanish Quiero collapsed in 2002. This report compares and contrasts these two markets in further detail.
