Synopsis

Italy is Europe’s leading mobile market in terms of subscriber numbers – some 50 million plus – though the competitiveness of the market is tenuous with only three players left in 2002. The Italian’s and Maltese have not embraced the Internet in the same way, however, with low Internet and PC penetration levels by EU standards. Given this, it is unsurprising that the broadband sector is immature. Consolidation in the Internet sector saw Internet host numbers halve in 2001, and consolidation was also taking place in the pay TV industry as Telepiu and Stream were set to merge. This report overviews the key developments in Italy and Malta in 2002.
