Synopsis

France is the third largest market in Europe, but it has not embraced the Internet or mobile phones with the same enthusiasm as many of its neighbours. Switzerland has been far more enthusiastic and has far higher penetration levels of Internet use and mobile phone subscribers. Both countries are on par with broadband development, though Switzerland has cable and DSL services available compared to France’s DSL focus. The lack of cable TV networks is a factor in the failure of France’s digital terrestrial TV landscape. Financial problems besetting France Telecom and Vivendi Universal echo throughout the industry. This report gives the year’s highlights.
