Synopsis

The Eastern European telecom market in 2007 has benefited from strong underlying economic performances in the region generally. It has also been shaped by the EU’s growing presence in the region following Bulgaria and Romania’s ascension to the EU in 2007, with more than half of the countries within the region now part of the EU. Regulatory developments in the EU countries have improved market conditions for alternative operators, while the adoption of emerging technologies has allowed operators to focus on providing triple play services to customers. Many of the major players have consolidated their businesses to strengthen their positions in the face of increased competition. Broadband adoption has continued to grow sharply, and the take up of advanced broadband services such as FttH is promising. The broadband and mobile sectors were the main drivers of the market, and new subscriber additions continue to expand existing mobile markets. 3G or HSDPA services have been launched in most countries and improved mobile broadband offerings should improve take up. This report presents data and analysis on the Eastern European telecom market in 2007, noting the principal developments and presenting an analysis of the mobile and broadband markets.
