Synopsis

This report covers Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Macedonia, Romania and Yugoslavia. Fixed-line penetration rates are low in the region, other than in Greece and Cyprus. Mobile telecommunications density, except in Greece, is also lower than in Western Europe but is showing very strong growth. All countries other than Cyprus and Greece had higher than 50% annual growth to March 2002. Internet user numbers are lower than Western Europe including in Cyprus and Greece. In the remainder of the region they average below 5% of the population. Broadband access is almost non-existent and e-commerce is in its infancy, even in Greece.
