Synopsis

Chunghwa Telecom was formed by the Taiwan government in 1996. When wireless services were deregulated in 1997, the company rapidly lost market share to competitors, being slow to respond to tariff cuts and to introduce prepaid services. The trend has since been reversed with market share held at around 33%. The company acquired a 3G licence in Feb 2002 and has begun its network build-out. Since the fixed-line market was deregulated in 2000, the company has focussed on developing its IP network and services. The dominant ISP in Taiwan since 1995, the company has become the dominant provider of broadband Internet access and services over its ADSL network.
