Synopsis

In terms of subscribers, China Unicom is the third largest mobile provider in the world and the second largest provider of CDMA mobile services. In China, it is the fourth largest telco, the number two mobile provider and the only provider of CDMA mobile services. Its principal activity continues to be GSM and CDMA mobile services (in early 2005, it held 33% of the market), but it is the only Chinese operator licensed to provide all telecom services. Listed on HKSE and NYSE, the company is controlled by the Unicom Group, a government controlled public company listed in Shanghai. The company is focused on its rapidly expanding 2.5G CDMA 1X service.
