Synopsis

Mobile telephony in Venezuela has been a dynamic and competitive market. For many years, Telefónica’s Movistar and CANTV’s Movilnet were the only two companies that competed at the national level. Both Movistar and Movilnet operated CDMA networks over which they offered CDMA2000-1x and 1xEV-DO services. Regional GSM operators Infonet, Digitel, and Digicel were restricted to offering services within the rural communities of their concession areas until 2006, when they were merged into Digitel GSM. Movistar launched GSM services in 2007, and Movilnet did so in 2008. This report provides background information for the more regularly updated Venezuela - Mobile Market - Overview, Statistics and Forecasts. As such, it covers details on the history and development of Venezuela’s mobile market that are absent from the more up-to-date report, but it does not contain forecasts or statistics.
