Venezuela’s first experiences with the Internet date back to the 1980s. Commercial Internet access took off in 1996, when a number of ISPs received licences. Telecentres and cybercafés have helped to bridge the digital divide, bringing inexpensive Internet access to the people. Broadband has been slower to develop in Venezuela than in other Latin American markets. ADSL is the country’s leading broadband technology, offered by state-owned CANTV. Three cable TV operators, Inter, NetUno, and SuperCable, provide cable modem broadband. Other broadband technologies that have been tested, developed, or planned in Venezuela include Broadband Powerline, fixed-wireless, WiFi, WiMAX, and Fibre-to-the-Home. This report provides background information for the more regularly updated Venezuela - Broadband and Broadcasting Market - Overview, Statistics and Forecasts. As such, it covers details on the history and development of Venezuela’s broadband and broadcasting market that are absent from the more up-to-date report, but it does not contain forecasts or statistics.
