This report was archived in July 2007 and was last updated in December 2005. In November 2005 Telstra announced a very ambitious plan to upgrade its operational systems into a NGN and rolling out fibre to some 20,000 nodes in five cities. The plan was widely applauded. However, the company requires regulatory changes before it will embark on this plan. Furthermore, Telstra announced plans to rationalise its mobile networks and decommission the CDMA network. While this certainly makes sense, there are serious questions regarding the new 850MHz technology. Since the announcement the debate shifted to the regulatory environment.
