Synopsis

This report has been archived and has not been updated. It provides an analysis of Telstra’s efforts over the years to establish a presence overseas. After successful engineering projects by its predecessor, OTC, mainly in Indo-China, these efforts progressed through mainly unsuccessful attempts to establish operations in Europe, USA and Asia. Telstra’s ill-fated entry into the WorldPartners consortium and its demise is also included in the report. The company’s major recent offshore investments include: TelstraClear in NZ, its mobile businesses in Hong Kong and the Reach JV with PCCW. In September 2006, Telstra paid $329 million on to gain a 51% controlling stake in Chinese website SouFun.com. In November 2006 Telstra identified India and Malaysia as expansion markets for its operations and has launched negotiations in both countries to achieve a level playing field with existing players.
