Analyst: Paul Budde

Synopsis

The year 2004 will be a more of the same year for Telstra. From a shareholder point of view, the previous 2 years were disastrous but, business-wise, the company is trying to position itself for better times in the future. Not that 2004 will be a year of rapid recovery – on the contrary, improvement will be gradual. But Telstra is now putting together the basics that will begin to take effect in the period 2005-2008. However, it should also prepare itself for more political upheaval. Telstra is one of the most dominant carriers in the world; this will inevitably lead to further regulatory intervention and eventually some form of structural separation will have to be implemented.
