Synopsis

Tele Norte Leste, the holding company for the Telemar group, trades on the São Paulo Stock Exchange and NYSE, and is controlled by a group of Brazilian investors. The main operator, Telemar Norte Leste, is the incumbent fixed-line provider for Region 1 (northern, north-eastern and south-eastern Brazil). Telemar is the largest telecom operator in the country in terms of turnover and number of installed lines, covering around 65% of the territory and over half the population. Telemar also provides nationwide domestic and international long-distance telephony since July 2002, as well as mobile and Internet services through its subsidiaries Oi and Pegaso.
