Synopsis

We discuss in detail the most significant aspects of the current HTML standard, 4.01, and its XHTML counterpart. We discuss the OBJECT and LINK elements, ‘Ruby’ annotation of Japanese characters, XForms and new work by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and WHATWG.org to overcome the impasse caused by the mismatch between W3C’s vision of HTML development, the behaviour of browsers and the needs of web designers.
