Synopsis
Analogue mobile telephony began with many incompatible systems in the 1980s. By the mid 1990s, the 1G AMPS analogue system and its 2G digital descendant IS-136 TDMA were widely used in North America, with AMPS and 2G GSM the most prominent systems in other areas.
