Telcos gaining interest in the Philippines as a regional submarine cable hub

The major telcos in the Philippines have seen steady revenue growth in recent years. Despite a challenging business environment in 2024, PLDT reported a 3.2% increase in service revenue in the year , while service revenue in the first half of 2025 increased 2.7%, year-on-year. For its part, Globe telecom reported a 4% increase in mobile service revenue in 2024 though revenue fell 2% in the first half of 2025. Mobile data accounted for 86% of total mobile service revenue in the period, supported by a greater use of 5G services.

PLDT and Globe Telecom have maintained their dominance of the Philippines telecom market, despite their duopoly status having been removed by the government in 2017. The new entrant DITO Telecommunity became the third national operator, and though there were delays in its launch schedule the telco has still managed to secure about 10% of the mobile market by subscribers. NOW Telecom also gained a licence in 2020 and though it claimed to be the fourth operator in effect it lacked the spectrum and financial resources to compete effectively. Running up debts to the regulator and having failed to use its spectrum as per its licence conditions, the company had its mobile licence rescinded in April 2025.

The mobile sector remains the Philippines’ primary market for telecommunications. The unique terrain and resulting challenges associated with accessing remote parts of the archipelago means that in many areas fixed networks are neither cost-effective nor logistically viable. To address the lack of services in remote areas, Globe Telecom in June 2025 demonstrated a mobile satellite service with Lynk Global.
