Optus offers key services based on its fixed-line cable infrastructure as well as its upgraded mobile networks. In August 2015 the ACCC gave the final approval to a revised agreement for the transition of Optus' HFC customers onto the NBN, and the progressive acquisition and integration of parts of the telco's network with the NBN. In May 2015 Optus parent Singtel pledged to boost its investment in the telco to $1.8 billion over the next year to improve Optus's mobile network and increase its share in the fixed-line market. Also in 2015 Optus switched on 3x Carrier Aggregation (3x CA) using 1x FDD + 2x TDD technology in several Newcastle NSW.
Digital switching facilities, linked by fibre optic cable, have been installed in the major cities. The core HFC network has been upgraded with DOCSIS3.0 technology. The company continues to move ahead with technology updates to its networks. LTE networks were launched following consumer trials in the 1800MHz spectrum. Trial services have been launched using spectrum in the 700MHz ahead of the spectrum’s formal allocation in early 2015. Using these assets, Optus expected to provide 70% population coverage by March 2015 and 98% coverage by the end of 2016.
Facilities to attract businesses to use cloud-based services over the IP network have been launched to make use of the new Optus 10 satellite. This report provides an overview of the company network operations – HFC, the mobile Open Network, fibre and satellite operations.
