Synopsis
There have been many ups and downs in Austar’s history. It is a remarkable story of survival, particularly in the early years, when it was under attack from all the mega-players in the country. Its lucrative content deal, however, gave it the power to maintain a seat at the various negotiation tables. Its future became more secure following the Foxtel/Optus deal. CHAMP came to the company’s rescue financially. This also resulted in a close relationship with Foxtel, basically creating a metro pay TV monopoly for Foxtel and a regional monopoly for Austar.
