Synopsis

This report was archived in June 2007 and has not been updated. It contains a collection of company analyses up to 2006. For more recent information on AAPT, see separate report AAPT – Company Overview. AAPT started off as the champion of competition in Australia. However, being the 3rd national carrier also took its toll. The sheer cost involved, the relentless competition in the market and the frustrating regulatory regime severely stressed the company. Financial assistance arrived when Telecom New Zealand (Telecom) took over. The company then went through a number of reorganisations that resulted in a rudderless organisation, drifting without a clear direction – the most recent being in March 2006, which signalled a centralisation of power back to New Zealand. By May 2006, Telecom had been reviewing its ownership of AAPT for a considerable length of time, but had been unable to find a suitable buyer for the struggling subsidiary.
