Synopsis

In the December 2004 Roundtables I held in New Zealand the focus was on the Telecommunications Review that is currently taking place in that country. I urged the delegates to resist the temptation to concentrate on the smaller regulatory details and, instead, to think strategically and address the underlying problems. Otherwise competition could be delayed until the next review, somewhere in 2007/2008. Why waste this opportunity? This is a chance to catch up with the rest of the world. Like every other country, New Zealand needs a proper wholesale regime and structural changes are needed to force Telecom to deliver this. This is a national interest issue, not just a telecoms issue, and as such requires serious government attention.
