Synopsis

New Zealand’s current mobile market is a duopoly of Vodafone and Telecom Mobile. Fuelled by the arrival of Vodafone and the introduction of prepaid services, the number of subscribers has grown four-fold, from 620,000 in late 1998 to around 3 million by October 2004. Vodafone took the number one spot in mobile subscribers in New Zealand in 2003 and now has 55% of the subscriber market. The mobile duopoly certainly needs more regulatory scrutiny. This report contains market analysis in the mobile sector for the 2002 to 2003 period.
