Synopsis

The invention of the Personal Computer (PC) has facilitated the information society, driving computer gaming, word processing, desktop publishing, and of course the Internet. The bundling of modems with PCs was of course the great driver of the Internet, penetrating the residential market with great success. However, the PC, and its bundled modem, has become ubiquitous, with growth slowing at the turn of the millennium as businesses resolved their Y2K issues. Modem technology spread to non-PC connectivity methods such as ISDN, xDSL and cable. These issues and the state of the Australian market for PCs and modems is covered here.
