Synopsis

While competition in the Australian telecommunications market appears to be flourishing, in reality, the opposite is true. Telstra receives over 95% of all the profits in this market, has a 95% share of the local loop market, 75% of the long-distance telephone and broadband markets and 50% of the mobile telephony market. Although competition is stimulating changes, clearly, it is not working. This report provides background information on the history of competition, the realities of today’s market and the direction in which the market is heading.
