Synopsis

This report has been archived and has not been updated. With the growing maturity of digital cellular systems around the world, attention has increasingly turned to the development of 3G cellular systems. The main objective of 3G systems is to provide a more robust network with a range of data and multimedia services. With 3G, plain data traffic, eg for emails, is starting to take off (rather than mobile content). A strong update in 3G saw Telstra’s subscribers rise to just over the 2 million mark by July 2007. So, Hutchison dominance of the 3G market has now ended and BuddeComm predicts that Telstra should reach the 4 million 3G subscriber mark by the end of 2008, of a total market of 8 million subscribers.
