Synopsis

The deployment of wireless broadband Internet systems and services in Asia has started to gather pace. After a tentative start, a range of wireless broadband technology platforms are being rolled out or are being planned in the various regional markets. One challenge for wireless broadband continues to be the establishing of viable business models. Not unexpectedly, the high technology markets in the region - Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore - have been leading the way. There were an estimated 70,000 WiFi hotspots across the region by early 2008. The big interest, however, is in mobile WiMAX and mobile variations on that platform. This report looks at the development of wireless broadband in Asia and its major markets.
