Executive Summary

Mobile communications

The killer application on mobile remains voice and beyond voice, there will not be a lot of room for growth apart from the current niche market for mobile data in business. Finally we are beginning to see a more rapid rollout of 3G services in Australia, as mobile operators must tap into new revenue streams. 3G will give operators the network efficiencies to become more competitive both in voice and data services. Hutchison continues to outperform its competitors, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, in terms of market growth, but competition is heating up in the 3G arena.

Substitution has started rather late in Australia. While Vodafone had threatened with it for many years, it was Hutchison that led the charge in 2003 and 2004 but it was not until 2005 before some real action took place. Telstra reported a drop of 7% in fixed lines, in most cases seeing these customers move over to mobile. Further price cuts are needed to bring Australia into line with the rest of the world. Substitution will also fuel the developments in fixed-mobile conversion market. However wireless broadband could even play a bigger role here.

Mobile data

Cellular mobile networks have been built for voice services and even more importantly have been finetuned over the years for efficient and effective voice transmission. While both 2G and 3G allow, in principle, for a large range of mobile data services, these networks can never be optimised for that. Voice will remain the killer application for mobile with some data services included as support services and niche market services. WiMAX and 4G are the real solutions for mobile data but by then it will be called wireless personal broadband.
