Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived September 2005 and has not been updated. South Korea has the highest number of broadband connections per capita in the world. By early 2005, 25% of the population, or 75% of households, were broadband subscribers. Hanaro’s acquisition of Korea Thrunet in early 2005 will position the company to better compete against KT. Powercomm was awarded a licence in mid-2005 to provide broadband services; this will no doubt create a marketing flurry by competitors in the saturated South Korean broadband market, with broadband providers fighting to retain their customer bases. This report describes the South Korea’s broadband market and the way that growth has been driven by a range of factors, including strong government support.
