Synopsis

The current mobile market is a duopoly of Vodafone New Zealand and Telecom Mobile. With 2.7 million subscribers between them, the pair operate the only cellular networks in the country, although Vodafone has also partnered with TelstraClear to resell its mobile offerings. TelstraClear has indicated that it intends to play a more leading role in future by building its own 3G network. A fourth player, Econet Wireless New Zealand (EWNZ) has secured spectrum but has yet to enter the market and looks increasingly unlikely to do so.
