While the major urban centres have been relatively well-served with broadband access and services, the rural and regional areas of New Zealand have been neglected. Various initiatives have been launched in the past two years to help to address this problem, both by the government - with its nationwide Project PROBE that it has given the task of bringing broadband to all schools by the end of 2004 - and by a number of individual companies as well as local authorities.
