Synopsis

The fortunes of New Zealand’s telecommunications market saw a definite upturn in 2003, and the trend will continue into 2004. The dominance of incumbent Telecom is coming under increasing commercial pressure from TelstraClear and Vodafone, as well as increasing regulatory pressure from a Telecommunications Commissioner who has already shown a willingness to favour competition. Attention seems to have been all on broadband in 2003, with several networks rolling-out and extending to meet the demands of government, as well as business and residential users.
