Synopsis

A WLAN is a flexible data communication network used as an extension to, or an alternative for, a wired LAN in a building. WLANs are useful when employees are on the move, in temporary locations or where cabling may hinder the installation of wired LANs. This report discusses the development of WLANs, their uses and marketing issues, forecasts, the technology, security concerns and the associated 802.11 standard. While the future of WLAN is still uncertain. If the industry can get the right business models off the ground, it could become a very interesting ‘disruptive’ technology. Especially in countries wire fixed broadband is slow to take off.
