Synopsis

Archived report: This report was archived in July 2006, and is no longer updated. The objective of Intelligent Vehicle/Highway System (IVHS) is to provide the traveller with better information about the system being used, its status, breakdowns, traffic problems, etc. It is intended to improve miles travelled, fuel consumed, pollution and safety. The favoured mode of IVHS appears to be voice communication or data communication through radio frequencies from a control centre, or vehicle location data can be sent to the control centre. This report discussed the major applications that were being developed in this field, including traffic control, automated fare collection, vehicle telematics, fleet management and GPS applications.
