Person-to-person messaging services such as SMS are a popular way to communicate and are often used as a cheaper alternative to making mobile calls. The SMS market grew by default despite carriers refusing to properly market and package their SMS services for most of the 1990s. Today around 1 trillion text messages are sent each year, and this number is growing. The mobile industry is now looking towards Instant Messaging, with dozens of trials taking place around the world.
