Synopsis

Archived report. This report was archived in 2007 and has not been updated. Person-to-person messaging services such as SMS are a popular way to communicate and are often used as a cheaper alternative to making mobile calls. The SMS market grew by default despite carriers refusing to properly market and package their SMS services for most of the 1990s. Today around 1 trillion text messages are sent each year, and this number is growing. The mobile industry is now looking towards Instant Messaging, with dozens of trials taking place around the world. This report provides an overview and analysis of both the SMS and IM markets and includes statistics and forecasts.
