Synopsis

Paging was the first mobile communication service for many as citywide paging systems were operating as early as 1963 in the USA and Europe. Despite the huge success of SMS, the paging market continues to be profitable in some areas due to the introduction of advanced messaging technologies and sheer numbers in developing countries like China. This report describes the history and advances in one-way and two-way paging and telemetry, together with a comparison between paging and SMS.
