Archived report. The ongoing improvements in infrastructure have driven the continuing uptake of mobility and broadband around the world and in 2014 mobile broadband will in fact be the fastest growth area for the overall telecoms sector. But increased usage has caused data traffic jams on the 3G networks as this infrastructure was not designed for the rapid increase in traffic over the last couple of years.
The release of 4G/LTE mobile broadband and growing uptake by consumers and businesses will certainly ease the issue in the short term - but as user uptake increases so will the amount of bandwidth consumed. Anticipation of the growing demand has resulted in LTE becoming the fastest developing mobile technology to date. For further information on LTE see separate report: BuddeComm Intelligence Report - Global LTE Trends, Statistics and Leading Markets.
This BuddeComm report includes recent industry insights and statistics on the global mobile broadband sector as well as an overview of the key competing technologies.
Wireless broadband and FttH should be developed, in a complementary and harmonious way. Seamless integration between FttH and 5G will occur later on in this decade. In 2014 developments in working towards a harmonising of WiMAX with LTE and HetNet architecture is a key trend. In 2014 around half of the world’s population will be covered by a 3G network, according to the ITU. Many operators in North America are interested in small cell development, especially some of the larger operators which are deploying up to hundreds of thousands a year.
