Archived report. This report was archived in 2006 and has not been updated. The charges for fixed line calls is steadily being reduced globally. The reductions have taken many different forms in different countries involving bundling options, unmetered Internet dial-up etc. With the move towards governments enforcing the relaxation of the incumbents’ grip on infrastructure, new competitive entrants are emerging and forcing prices down further. The biggest change however is expected to come from technology developments such as VoIP and broadband. Mobile competition furthermore is stimulating the substitution of fixed calls. This report discusses these matters, and provides statistics of international tariffs and trends.
