It has become clear that the structure of the telecoms industry in the future will be significantly different from the vertically-integrated industry that has been in existence for the last hundred years. With telecoms expanding beyond voice into data-based applications, based on Internet technologies such as IP, the market is rapidly opening itself up to a range of new services. These changes will create a boom in new business activities based on a more economic utilisation of the infrastructure. The business opportunities beyond the structural changes are enormous, especially in the field of value-added infrastructure such as data centres.
