Synopsis

Archive report: this report was archived in September 2005 and has not been updated since. For current information on US telecom and broadband markets, see: USA - Telecommunications - Key Statistics and USA - Convergence - Triple Play & Quadruple Play. In 2004 the US telecommunications market was business as usual, which may not sound too exciting, but was a huge change from the downturn from the previous few years. A full recovery was not expected until 2005 or 2006. The wireless and broadband markets were showing healthy growth, and even some segments of the fixed-line telecom market were returning an improved margin. Broadcast services had shown little growth, but advanced services, such as digital TV and other interactive services continued to expand at a steady pace. Regulatory decisions were having adverse impacts on competition across the whole sector as the Triennial Decision of 2003 had been overturned.
