Synopsis

Archive report: this report was archived in September 2005 and has not been updated. For current information on USA mobile data, see report USA - Mobile Market - Analysis, Statistics & Forecasts. The market for mobile and wireless data services in the US has grown from a non-existent one to one of the fastest growing and most competitive markets in the wireless industry. As carriers realised that the potential to increase minutes of use was shrinking, they became focusing on new growth services, such as messaging, gaming, information and location services – all delivered using a wireless data platform. Mobile messaging services (such as SMS and SMS-like services) started to take off as operators completed cross-network messaging capabilities – and MMS services were launched, however, it took time before users adopted these services due to poor billing and subscription solutions.
