Synopsis

Archive report: this report was archived in September 2005 and has not been updated. For current information on USA fixed networks, see report USA - Telecommunications - Key Statistics. The US fixed-line local telecoms market grew from $121.1 billion in 2000 to $128.1 billion in 2003. Much of this growth came from data and mobile communications as eroding voice margins inflected by higher levels of competition continued to drive down the cost of an average voice call. A statistically significant increase in the penetration of telephones in households (to 95.1%) created an increase in total traffic, which drove up revenue for local services. In 2004, this trend reversed as penetration rates began to drop again.
