In 2012 two large Internet companies in China expressed an interest in improving Internet security. Baidu and Tencent wanted to work with Internet security developers to create products – with mobile security in particular considered a growth area for those players in the security industry. There was speculation that Chinese consumers may soon be prepared to pay for security and anti-virus products in order to avoid the advertising embedded in free offerings. In 2014 China’s president also stated that cyber-security was to become a key focus for the government going forward.
