Synopsis

Archive report: this report was archived in September 2005 and has not been updated. For current information on USA fixed networks, see report USA - Telecommunications - Key Statistics. Since 2002, growth has slowed in the US long-distance and international toll markets as increased competition negatively impacted margins. The consolidation of the industry during the dotcom era came back to bite a number of major carriers, such as MCI (previously WorldCom) and Global Crossing, both of which faced bankruptcy due to unmanageable debt levels. International call usage grew healthily although prices continued to plummet.
