Synopsis

Archived report. This report was archived in 2005 and has not been updated. With ever increasing demand for broadband access and regulatory emphasis on deregulation and competition, wireless broadband is attracting attention as an alternative to the incumbent carriers. It started with WiFi in the early 00s, but this was only successful in business applications. Recently, WiMAX has been hyped as overcoming the problems of WiFi, but a lack of standards and commercially viable consumer equipment has seen the early opportunity for mass market deployment evaporate. Developments in DSL and the development of improved mobile technologies are real threats. Nevertheless, WiMAX may still become a great success, evolving around a mixture of fixed broadband alternatives, especially in regional areas. This report covers the developments in WiMAX developments in the USA, Canada and Latin America.
