The Internet has led to the success of Internet Media companies like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo and while they continue to focus on their core business of search services, these companies, as well as the other leading digital media players such as eBay, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Twitter etc also continue to look for other opportunities. The success of Internet Media companies can be partly attributed to their willingness to compete in many different markets and they continue to look for opportunities presented by developments from mobility, cloud computing, e-commerce, home media, social media, online VoD, infrastructure etc.

The emerging markets have also not escaped attention; China in particular is seen as a growth opportunity. These companies also have a vested interest in making sure that the digital economy is developed and, like most others, are frustrated by the extremely slow pace at which the telcos are upgrading their networks. They will do anything to nudge the process along, or to kick-start developments and evidence of this emerged with Google becoming involved in fibre networks.
